HEALTH & FAMILY LIFE

We were asked to talk about something to do with Family Life … then I had this email sent to me that had an impact… it is a new TV commercial that is targeting parents and our influences on our children for good or bad. They have used the most common negative issues within society today that are affecting children…

This commercial made me question our influence on our Children as Christian parents and as a result our impact on our community and society in general as witnesses for Jesus Christ. After all, we can look at Christian parenting books and read about how our witnessing for Jesus begins in the home with our own Children.

CHILD GUIDANCE pg 476 states

“As workers for God, our work is to begin with those nearest. It is to begin in our own home. There is no more important missionary field than this.”

We can look at the Bible for learning what not to do by the mistakes of parents like ISAAC:  who blessed the wrong son. Jacob deceived his father and his brother Esau out of his birthright. Esau wept bitterly and hated his brother for years because of his father’s words or lack of them.

Our words as parents have a huge impact on our children.  We can build them up or tear them down. A parent’s word can shape how a child views themselves and their world.

What were the last words you spoke to your child today?

Another example to learn from is the parenting of JACOB:

Joseph was favoured by his father Jacob.  He was given a special coat and this favouritism led to family dysfunction that lasted for decades. It drove the brothers to an act that caused great guilt and resulted in lies and cover ups.

We thought well who then is the perfect example as a parent in the Bible?

Was it John the Baptist’s parents? Perhaps; but then thought, no.

The perfect parent is God – our heavenly Father.

He is perfect, long suffering, gentle, patient, loving unconditionally, and kind; and yes, he still disciplines us too!  He is our example to follow as a parent to our Children and as a result an influence to the world.

Lamentations 2:19 states: “Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord. Lift your hands toward Him for the life of your young children”.

Some positive bible texts for encouragement to parents are:

Do not be conformed to this world, but by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes I will help you…” Isaiah 41:10

All you children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of you children.  Isaiah 54:13

DO YOU FEEL LIKE IT IS TO LATE?  THAT YOU HAVE ALREADY FAILED AS A PARENT?  THAT PERHAPS YOUR INFLUENCE COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER?  HERE ARE SOME PROMISES FOR YOU:

“Cast all your cares upon God for He cares for you” 1 Peter 5:7

“All things work together for good to those who love the Lord.”  Romans 8:28

“God makes all things beautiful in His time.” Ecclesiastes 3:11

MOST OF ALL; HOLD ONTO THIS:

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.  At just the right time, we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. (Galatians 6:9)
